Item specifics:

Genre: His Origin RETOLD! Publisher: FAMOUS TALE in 80 Pg #1
Type: $75 READER INCLUDED! Character: "SUPER-MENACE"

One of Ed's Favorite SUPERMAN stories was the tale of SUPER-MENACE; Superman #137 May 1960.

The origin of Superman is retold with new details; an artificially created duplicate of Kal-el who (unlike the Bizarro imperfect duplicate), was a PERFECT copy of Superman, although a non-living essence created by chance in space of pure "cosmic force."

This "creature" landed on earth in a duplicate rocket, but while the "real" baby Kal-el fell into the hands of the loving Kents, the "other' being went to the hands of Wolf and Bonnie Derek  ('Bo Derek' ? you must be kidding...no, that was the step -mothers name, in 1960!), a husband & wife team of evil (but VERY small-time) criminals, who raised the super-powered being in opposite standards to the good values of the Kent family.

Written by Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel, the full book length drama (rare for 1960 DC storylines) ends in a battle between the 2 adult Super-beings; it was NOT written as an imaginary story...but an untold event in the Superman continuity.  The classic cover and interior art for this work was drawn by (arguably) the greatest Superman artist of all time -- Curt Swan.

Here for sale is a set of Crazy Ed's favorite copies of this story, in a CGC version of this issue:
a very respectable Universal CGC 7.0 (Fine to Very Fine).

Do you recognize the "Superman in Criminals eye-mask"?

It was more widely known in this Book:

Reader Copy: included with the CGC copy of  Superman #137 is a complete VG copy of Eighty Page Giant #1 for you to read and enjoy! The respect for the collectors mentality to include the reader copy is the reason many collectors buy CGC comics at national conventions from Crazy Ed.

WHY DOES THIS SET INCLUDE AN 80 Pg Giant #1?

  1. 80 Page Giant # 1's most famous story was the one pictured: Superman wearing a criminal's eyemask, a reprint of Superman 137 in its entirety--from 4 years prior!
  2. 80 Page Giant # 1 (1964) was groundbreaking--it redefined the DC 80 Pg Giant market.
  3. 80 Pg Giant # 1 was advertised initially as Superman Annual #9--but DC began a new series of 80 Pg Giants, with new numbering, in Summer 1964.
  4. 80 Pg Giants later migrated to the regular series of each character, appearing in Batman, Superman, Flash, Jimmy, Lois, JLA, World's Finest and even the war and romance issues!  There are 89 of these particular Giants published from 1964-1972 and the Overstreet Guide lists them all! Some 1960's collectors treasure these issues more than anything else from their Childhood as the way they could read and enjoy reprinted older or classic Golden age DC stories.
  5. This 80 Pg Giant # 1 copy is graded a solid VG 4.0 with Offwhite pages. The cover colors are still rich and bright.  Light cover tears and wear but still a solid, complete key.

GUIDE PRICES & COMMENTS

The 2009 Overstreet guide value for Superman #137 in NM- 9.2 is $365.00  The Overstreet guide should ID deserving issues. It fails to do so. Considering the story was written by the Superman co-Creator it should well "break out" the issue in the Overstreet in the manner described in the GCD (Grand Comic Database)---which describes this issue #137 as "Origin retold with new details." After all, if the Overstreet guide can distinguish issue #139 as a "Lori Lemaris appearance" it should distinguish such an important untold-retold Origin story. Don't get Crazy Ed started!

A collector looking for AFFORDABLE classic, unrestored higher grade Superman Key issues from the Silver Age would be pleased by the overall look of this issue. There is value implicit in a CGC fee spent to grade & guarantee the book is unrestored, and then there is some $75 (guide for VG) value in the copy of 80 pg Giant #1 which is included.
